Armenia - The Betrayed, was
broadcast on Sunday, 26 January, 2003 on BBC Correspondent Two at 1915 GMT. In a
special Correspondent to coincide with Holocaust memorial week, Fergal Keane
investigates how a terrible slaughter, three quarters of a century ago, has
returned to haunt the relationship between Turkey and its western allies. The
program also discloses how President George W Bush and his predecessor Bill
Clinton both broke promises to the Armenian community that they would recognize
genocide. Talking to Armenian survivors, Turkish officials and key political
figures in the United States Correspondent investigates a story of terrible
slaughter, political intrigue and a people betrayed.
The Director and
producer of the movie, James Miller, 34, was killed in the Gaza Strip when an
Israeli armored vehicle opened fire and wounded him in the neck. He had been
making a documentary on house demolitions in Palestinian areas. According to his
colleague Fergal Keane, they were due to
receive medals of honor in Beirut for that film (Armenia: The Betrayed). Keane
said "I was fortunate to have worked with James in Turkey for Correspondent. He
was truly moved by what he saw in Van and wanted to make more documentaries on
the Armenian Genocide."
